Ford Galaxie

The Ford Galaxie was a full size car built from 1959 through 1974. It featured a V8 engine, an abundance of chrome and Thunderbird-inspired design elements. The Galaxie name was used for Ford’s top models in the full-size range from 1959 until 1961 in a marketing campaign to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. Some Galaxie’s were high-performance machines while others were plain family sedans but all models featured the luxury that consumers were looking for.

By 1962 all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge with the 500 and 500XL available as the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD made its appearance in 1965 and later dropped the “Galaxie 500” from the LTD. The Galaxie 500 7-Litre followed and was designed for people who expect a lot more than just “modest” motoring with the 7-Litre Thunderbird 428 V8 rated at 345 horsepower that the car was named for. As the years passed, the Ford Galaxie would get bigger, wider, longer and quieter resulting in more room and a more luxurious ride for passengers. All models ranged in body styles that consisted of two and four door configuration, hardtop, convertible and sports-roof. The LTD would stay on after 1974 as the top full-size model while the Galaxie was slowly phased out.
